Today, Big Baby took three tiny, lurching, unsupported steps into my arms. In one of the great ironies of motherhood, I celebrated her new skill and independence by sweeping her off her newly useful feet and hugging her tight.

And so soon after her first birthday too!

Thank you! You must come see her! Are you still free next weekend? Sweety's parents may be around--I have to check their schedule--but if we could get together, I would love that.

How exciting! Was her daddy there to see it?

BTW, I got your thank you note in the mail today (it might have come sooner, but I hadn't checked the mailbox in several days). The picture on it was very cute!

Alas, no. Nor did I have the camera going. But I called him right away and thanked him for working hard so I can stay home.

I'm glad you liked it. Those dresses are *really* cute on them. Must get your e-mail from Sweety so I can send you pix.

I'm glad to hear it! :)

And she took two steps to him tonight!

She doesn't seem to understand why we're so excited, but she's enjoying the extra attention.

Yay! Although, I'm sure she was bound to take steps in front of him eventually. ;-)

Is your Little Baby trying to walk, too?

Not so much. She can crawl and cruise very well, so she doesn't see the need. And she is (please do not quote me on this when they are teenagers) a less stable shape for walking, since she's not as bottom-heavy.

*lol* Don't worry - I'll never tell! ;-)

Besides, I'm sure she'll follow her sister soon enough! :)

Soon, ambulatorybaby shall conquer the world! Muahaha!

Or, at least the living room. :-)

They already own the living room. I understand they now plan to take over YOUR APARTMENT.

I'd invite you to bring them down to visit, but a) I suspect you prefer having people visit them in their royal palace, rather than descending to meet the peons, and b) honestly, my place isn't particularly baby-proofed. Catproofed, yes. But cats don't have thumbs.

Point. I'm also not sure if they're allergic to cats; their father certainly is. It sounds like yours are low-dander, but I'm not going to push it until the kids are over a year of adjusted age. Maybe they can be absentee rulers.

So, to be clear, this is not "parenting advice", as I really don't know a whole lot on the topic. But I know I've heard that there's some debate back and forth on whether shielding small children from dirt and allergens is actually helpful; some people seem to think now that giving them some level of exposure actually helps get their immune systems to work right -- that it trains the body on what sorts of things it has to deal with (making your response to food contamination better, if you encounter that later in life), and also sets appropriate levels of response to potential allergens.

I really have no idea how sane such ideas are. I know I grew up being allowed to go grub in the dirt with the dogs, and I do seem to have ended up with virtually no allergies, whereas my dad who grew up with no pets is allergic to cats. OTOH, the plural of anecdote is not data. I figure, if I have kids, I'll start really researching such things. *shrug*

Oh no! When you grab a baby after her first steps, she never walks again!!!! Didn't anyone tell you that???? :)

Seriously, though, congratulations, and my condolences. Once they start walking, they're soon running, and you're running after them. Mine was an early walker, and her Daddy was so pleased, but I missed the lap baby who couldn't get away.

With all the garbage new parents hear, I'm surprised no one has.

I have trouble imagining any creature running faster than Little Baby can crawl, but we shall see. All I know is that I'm glad I ordered an extra SuperYard to go around the Christmas tree.

Nifty. I will have to come see this ambulatory baby (possibly plural by the time I get to it).

That would be great! We haven't seen you in far too long. Of course, she's not walking *all* the time now. But we know she *can.*
